渣浆泵从物理学原理上讲属于离心泵的一种，从概念上讲指通过借助离心力（泵的叶轮的）的作用使固、液混合介质能量的一种机械，将电能转换成介质的动能和势能的设备。渣浆泵的名称是从输送介质的角度来划分的一种离心泵。

渣浆泵采用的压水室常见的是蜗壳，在内装式潜水泵中多选用径向导叶或流道式导叶。蜗壳有螺旋型、环型和型三种。螺旋形蜗壳基本上不用在渣浆泵中。环形压水室由于结构简单制造方便在小型渣浆泵上采用的较多。但由于型（半螺旋形）压水室的出现环形压水室的应用范围逐渐变小。因型压水室兼具有螺旋的率性和环形压水室的高通透性。
